The paper aims to analyze the legal milestones that accompanied the process of institutionalization of public teacher education in the state of Mato Grosso, between 1910 and 1970. The documents studied were the state legislation, other public do cuments and some census data. The text discusses two aspects to understand the teacher education courses: the development of the primary school and the expansion of teacher education courses in Brazil and in the state of Mato Grosso. With respect to the proposed object, there was an ex pansion of access to teacher education courses in the 1930s, when enrollment in primary education started to become more significant.
