This paper deals with Early Childhood Education, the first stage of Basic Education, and its trajectory in the National Book and Didactic Material Program (Programa Nacional do Livro e do Material Didático – PNLD). The objective was to analyze the contributions of this important public policy to the field of the right to Early Childhood Education, and, consequently, to the field of teacher training, bringing considerations about the first call notices for the analysis of teaching materials for the PNLD 2019 – Notices no. 01/2017 and no. 01/2019 – and their material and training contributions for the professionals of the education area. In addition, a reflection on the use of textbooks at this stage and the setbacks of the Notice no. 02/2020 for the PNLD 2022, which, in line with the National Literacy Policy (Política Nacional de Alfabetização – PNA), of 2019, and without dialogue with the Early Childhood Education and Initial reading instruction/Literacy, it imposes the removal of children's rights and teaching autonomy. It is concluded that the Notice no. 02/2020 is not in line with the provisions of the legal documents that, historically, are part of the composition of the principles and specificities of the Brazilian Early Childhood Education curriculum.
