This article aims to problematize a theoretical-methodological issue inherent in scientific research: the literature review. In order to do that, some practices developed in a research group from the south of the country have been described and related to information obtained from a group of Education graduate students, and the concepts of state of the art and review of literature were also problematized. This descriptive, problematizing and operative study presents a way to conduct the literature review. Characterized as an essay, the text brings up justifications to consider a literature review, which is identified as a ritual. The text also evidences the goals and the ways of approaching the literature review, as well as the strategies to complete each of its steps, especially the ones that differentiate it from the state of the art, by pointing out some of the most frequently seen investigations on literature review and in the research group experiences. For this problematization, the study is grounded on a poststructuralist perspective and seeks to show the intricacies of this investigation issue, with different understandings, paths and possibilities, but, above all, the need to perform this research ritual. As a result, it was observed that the literature review plays an important role in research, and it can be conducted with rigor, productivity and originality.
