The History of Mathematics Education (HEM) is constituted as a disciplinary field: it has members of groups that share knowledge, methods, programs and content of reference driven by consensuses that self regulate. The aim of this article is to present how the HEM establishes itself in time, making a parallel with the constitution of another previous field: Mathematical Education. The text dialogues with authors of the History of Mathematics (SCHUBRING, 2014); Mathematical Education (KILPATRICK, 1996), History of Mathematics Education (VALENTE, 2014) and History of Science (LENOIR, 2004). In the end, we present some considerations about the History of Mathematics Education course implemented in a teacher training course at a federal university.
