This article develops a history of the Portuguese Language as a Secondary School subject, basing and focusing mainly on the Brazilian guide to the Textbook National Program (PNLD, originally). By acknowledging the subjects's strong presence throughout our Basic Education curriculum, Secondary stages included, the approach here goes beyond simply analyzing the Portuguese Language content presented in textbooks. The actual questioniong englobes an specific dimension -the guidance given to teachers by the Ministry of Education and specialists regarding the choice of textbooks to be used in the classroom. In which ways does the PNLD frame the teaching of Portuguese Language to Secondary school? Which topics and content are prioritized? What are the suggested didactic strategies? What is the criteria in place when deciding the "excellence" of the recommended textbooks? The inquiries listed above guide the development of the present discussion.
