OLIVATO, Laís. “Lancasterian Punishments” in the Province of Minas Gerais (1829). Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.3, pp.846-858. ISSN 1982-7806. https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v16n3-2017-18.
The purpose of the transcription of the leaflet Castigos Lancasterianos, published in Ouro Preto in 1829, is to contribute to the studies of Minas Gerais education of the first half of the nineteenth century. In accordance with the educational policies of the beginning of the Brazilian Empire, the resolution for this impression given by the Government Council of the Province of Minas Gerais demonstrates the local concern with the regulation of school practices in the afterwards of the October 15, 1827’s Law. Constituted by a list of ten types of moral punishment and a brief description of the configuration of school indiscipline, this document was intended for public teachers in the province. In addition, the elaboration of this material in Minas Gerais was related to the publication of Lancasterian textbooks that circulated in Europe and America at the same time and, therefore, it was in dialogue with the transnational policy of diffusion of this method of teaching that had begun in England.
