The article discusses state and capital cities experiences in Brazil about the competences and attributions of school principals, identifying the cases of regulation and the form of regulation of the theme. The study was developed from a survey in electronic portals of legislation in the country. The analysis of the data collected was done in a comparative way, observing similarities and differences between the cases studied. The conclusions show that most federated entities analyzed have legislation that regulates the roles of the school principal, with great diversity of aspects regarding their responsibilities. The most frequent aspects refer to institutional attributions, such as representing the school or looking after the school patrimony, as well as the recognition of the school principal as the main articulator of democratic administration and the political-pedagogical project, the latter task being the most repeated among the cases analyzed.
