Technological changes and legal aspects related to the protection of personal data are posing new questions that impose, first of all, a methodological reflection on the responsibility and deontological sphere of those who do research and teaching with oral sources. Over the course of 10 years, the Italian Association of Oral History (AISO) has elaborated reflections and documents on this matter; among these, the text Good Practices for Oral History, first published in 2015 and then revised in 2020 to respond to a new EU legislation on data protection. The essay is the result of a comparison between Italian and European experience with the working group on research ethics of the Forum for the Humanities, Social and Applied Social Sciences, Linguistic, Languages and Arts (FCHSSALLA). It consists of three parts: the process of drafting the AISO Good Practices document; the reception of the Good Practices and the impact of EU legislation on personal data protection; the issue of oral archives and the debate on Open Science and its application in academic research and university life.
