Since the 1960s, numerous public policies have been made to foster the growth of medical schools in Brazil. A systematic review of federal laws was carried out to describe the historical evolution of public policies for undergraduate medical education. Of the 21 public policies found, Decree nº 53.642 of 1964 and Decree nº 63.341 of 1968 stand out, which allowed the expansion of medical education, mainly by private institutions with the release of the construction of teaching hospitals whose impacts remain until today.
