Deep changes in social structure in Latin American countries have led to changes in the corresponding educational systems, in occupational structure and social mobility mechanisms. In spite of its key role in this process, Education has not fulfilled the role of agent for cultural integration. In Latin American societies, segmentary forms coexist with modern forms of social hierarchy, where barriers defined by the colour of the skin have been reinforced by the new mechanisms of social exclusion. However sociological analyses, hinging solely on economy and ideology, tend to neglect the identity of social groups and their ways of social interaction and culture. Selected data suggest the inability of Education to interfere in socio-cultural gaps linked to racial self-identification, showing the need of renewed efforts by Sociology of Education to the understanding of that process.
