This study intends to investigate, through the analysis of the Coleção Biblioteca das Moças (Young Ladies Library Collection) novels, what are the specific roles of woman and teacher portrayed therein. It also endeavor in dealing with the literature habit as one of the social processes of appropriation and representation of uses and values ableto engender a self imagery and identity on the novel's readers. While trying to use a broad and flexible theoretic-methodological perspective, the author have recoursed to plural and interdisciplinary approaches, which characterize the history of Culture.
