This article aims to present a systematic literature review on the mapping of scientific production concerning the empirical research related to the Sistema de Avaliação da Educação Básica [Basic Education Evaluation System] (SAEB). For this purpose, the Prisma method and the bibliometric analysis were used. The articles were selected from the Capes Journal Portal, SciELO and Doaj and date from 1995 to 2021. A total of 75 publications were considered and examined. From this sample, it was possible to create eight categories, which were organized according to the theme, objective and result of the empirical research related to SAEB. The study pointed to the need for future research that would consolidate the field of educational assessment based on evidence - gathered from the SAEB data.
