In this essay, the use of the information about the students' performances is analyzed in the context of (i) examinations administered and controlled externally; (ii) national evaluations; (iii) international evaluations; (iv) school evaluations; and (v) evaluations based on classes. Results are presented related to the effects of the use of the information on the educational policy, in the curriculum, what is taught at school, and the cognitive processes of the students. The effects can be positive or negative, intended or not, and they are more evident when we attribute to them a great importance on the students' performance. Although the major part of the resources to use the evaluation with the purpose of improving the quality of the learning process, they were inverted in the evaluations that involve externa agents, the big potential of its use seems to be in the improvement of the capacities of the teachers' evaluation.
