In this study we review some of the economic arguments that supported traditionally the public provision of education and the counterarguments that were wielded to support the introduction of the market mechanisms in the allowance of the section resources. The interest of reviewing this discussion is to analyze critically the origin and maintenance of the forms that were proposed in the latter years to improve the performance of the results of the learning process. Concretely, it reviews three dimensions among the ones that have been discussing internationally the introduction of the incentive mechanisms in the educational system: a) in a macro system level, by means of the subsidy to the demand; b) in a school level by means of assignations to promote processes and /or results and; c) in a teaching level, by means of changes in the salary structure.
