This paper presents the results of our research which aimed at identifying the representations of playfulness constructed by kindergarden educators in the municipal school of Jequié (Bahia, Brazil). It is a qualitative case-study. We used the social representations approach proposed by Moscovici (2003) and Jodelet (2001) which we believe important to the study of school practices. We had 6 female teachers as subjects and use autobiographical writing and half-structured interviews to collect data. The results show significant difference between the representations of 2 groups. In the first one, composed by 4 teachers, representations of playfulness reveal play as a diversion activity or as a pedagogical artifice; in the second group composed by 2 teachers, playfulness is perceived as an intern and extern experience of the subject, a potential agent of child development through discovery.
