Drawing on the movie Stella, directed by Sylvie Verheyde, I reflected about what is fundamental at the fundamental level school. I took advantage of the film to emphasize central aspects of school curriculum. Inspired on it, I argued for the importance of art and literature in the curriculum. I suggested that it is useful to have the support of interpreters, in the process of amplifying perception and sensitivity at school, that could offer data and information that individual experiences do not provide. Therefore, the value of a good teacher can be stressed. I focused, then, on school knowledge at fundamental school, analyzing issues involved in the processes of selecting and organizing this knowledge. I pointed out its importance and rejected the overemphasis on students’ experiences in some curricular proposals. I argued for the definition of basic curricular contents with the help of local educational authorities. I considered as a challenge the reflection on these contents, that need to be selected and organized at school level and not imposed by central authorities. I suggested that a partnership between school and local educational authorities could contribute to educational quality through the curriculum process, derived from a compromise between these two levels.
