This paper aims to analyze the representation of three female characters in short stories for children and young people, with an African theme, in the book Ulomma - The House of Beauty and other tales, by Nigerian writer Sunny and illustrated by Denise Nascimento, recognizing the relevance of the classic studies on fairy tales and children’s literature. From an Afrocentric perspective, the analysis highlights the importance of the word and the role of narratives in African and Afro-Brazilian cultures, with orality being a central element in the production and maintenance of different cultures, values and other themes. From the imagery point of view and from the discursive construction via the plot of the narrative, the objective is to locate the issue of female traditions and roles, mainly the black aesthetic valorization. Finally, the paths taken by children’s and young people literature are questioned, indicating the need for construction alternative routes for understanding them.
