This paper is aimed at reflecting on the evaluation of teaching at university level and its conditioning factors and impasses. With such an aim in mind, the paper ransoms questions related to pedagogy, epistemology and the power structure present in society and in higher education. The work supports the idea that evaluation is part of a process that is demanding ruptures with the traditional ways of teaching and learning. It establishes relations between the possibility of an evaluation of teaching guided by an emancipatory perspective and the institutional evaluation frameworks proposed by the Brazilian State which follow the logic of control and productivity.
