This work is a cross section of a research on institutional self-evaluation carried out in 1997 and 1998, in the Department of Industrial Mechanical Engineering (DAEM) of CEFET -MG. The purpose of the research was to subsidize the elaboration of a proposal for institutional self-evaluation for the Department, collectively constructed by teachers, students and staff. This paper presents on1y findings relative to students and has as specific objectives (1) to present the theoretical construction of three evaluation models tailor-made for and institution of higher education; and (2) to analyze the students' proposals vis-a-vis the legislation about institutional evaluation, Luckesy' s view of evaluation (1978) and the three abovementioned models.
