This article presents the results of the study “Six-year-old children in the nine-year Elementary School: activities, dialogues, playtimes, imagination, and social interaction in the context of teaching and learning”, which has as main objective the understanding of how six-year-old children enrolled in nine-year Elementary School are living and experiencing childhood in the context of teaching and learning. This is a qualitative research and takes place under the light of social-historical approach. The study was conducted in eight classes of the first year on a public school in Rio Grande, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, through participant observation in the classroom and school context. The data has been recorded in field diaries, and semi-structured interviews were used with 41 children of four different classrooms. The analysis of collected and produced data makes evident that children like to play in the classroom context, the importance and constant presence of playful activities and different languages in the everyday teaching practices, and that continuing education for teachers is essential to comprehend this new teaching modality.
