The aim of the paper is to present and discuss the strategies developed and used during pre-service training of mathematics teachers; these strategies are part of Oral History and narratives regarding the problematization of pedagogical approaches. We argue that Oral History, as it implies the problematization of the recent past and the creation of discourses about recent subjects, has the potential to influence the understandings and practices involving mathematics education. The paper introduces the course Foundations of Elementary Mathematics, part of the syllabus of the teacher education program at Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Rio Claro, as the context in which those strategies were developed and used, as well as discussing the stages and results of their application. It is assumed that the work developed during the course contributes to one type of action for the training of teachers that considers the professional as a representative of diverse communities of memory in the development of education, mathematics and mathematics education.
