This research work had as main objective to study, describe and interpret the use of videogames in preschool education, based on the following research question: What is the pedagogical potential of videogames in preschool education? The theoretical framework that supports this investigation reviews the major options of preschool education in Portugal, the learning of mathematics by young children, the integration of communication and information technologies in kindergarten, and the use of videogames in educational settings. This investigation takes a qualitative/interpretative approach, based on observing children while they were interacting on the practice of three videogames which were selected specifically for this research and in the subsequent analysis and interpretation of these interactions, recorded in video format. Other data collection instruments were used, namely a field diary, interviews with teachers and children, a questionnaire to the parents and informal conversations with all participants. The results show that children have pleasure in the use of computer games, that these games stimulate both children cooperation and the discussion on the activities carried out, and promote problem solving. On the other hand, it was shown the need of providing both the teacher and the staff with new technologies education, and, in particular the theme of videogames.
