Abstract: This opening paper of the special discusses the initial training of teachers in school contexts and the binomial theory-practice focusing, in particular, on supervised practicum. By means of two statements, we seek to demonstrate that each element of the binomial taken in isolation tends not to fulfill its formative purpose. Still, it aims to share different ways of seeing supervised practicum in undergraduate courses from the studies and research that make up the special issue. Thus, it is expected to contribute to strengthen the need for teacher training based on research and the construction of a reflective practice, investing in supervised practicum as spaces for the construction of apprehension, deepening and understanding work on the problems that involve education.
