WARDE, Mirian Jorge  y  SALIM, Sandra Aparecida Melro. The monumental Building of the Kindergarten annex to the Normal School of São Paulo: demolition of an Republic emblem (São Paulo, 1896-1939). Conjectura: filos. e Educ. [online]. 2020, vol.25, e020046. ISSN 2178-4612.  https://doi.org/10.18226/21784612.v25.e020046.

This article analyzes the trajectory of the Kindergarten of the Normal School of São Paulo conceived by republicans from São Paulo whose project was to organize and modernize the state’s public education at the end of the 19th century. Even as part of the complex built to serve the education of the people, the building designed for the kindergarten did not resist political and economic pressures, and it was demolished in 1939. The reasons for the demolition of this building that destroyed the physical and administrative structure of the institution, which would have lost relevance in the history of its constitution, will be pointed out, as well as the values defended and practiced that indicated the sumptuous architecture designed for this institution. Reasons that led to the dismantling of that school in the 1930s, with the possible consonances and dissonances between the political authorities are indicated and analyzed. The urban and social transformations since the beginning of the Republic accelerated economic growth, which translated into more investment capacity for the city and helped to consolidate the desire of the new elite to produce a new urban space to live. The modernization of the city accompanied this vision. The stage for new life should be modern, comfortable and beautiful. Seduced by the state’s official propaganda and fascinated by messages of progress, the people – without realizing it – applauded the Republic’s agony and took to the streets to venerate Getúlio, father of the poor. The constant reformulations of the school, the urban transformations and the verticalization of the city made it possible for Prestes Maia to continue with its Avenues Plan and collapse with the original and monumental building of this public school institution for early childhood care.
