The article analyzed the academic development involving the theme of out-of-school education in the Brazilian Meetings on History of Education between the years of 2000 and 2017. It is a theoretical and bibliographical reflection on different studies of the state of knowledge. It is inspired by the idea of education as culture of Brandão (2002) and cultural pedagogy of Andrade and Costa (2017). In the works we reviewed, school stands out as the main locus of human formation, and there are few papers on out-of-school education, despite persistent presence of the topic among the various axes of these Events. We emphasize the importance of the epistemological debate on the multiple meanings of education capable of encompassing the complex and multifaceted ways of being and learning.
