This ethnographic study of everyday life in a public elementary school in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, aims at understanding how school failure is produced. The results show an intra-school dynamics featuring three basic levels of conflicts and antagonism: between teachers and "specialists", teachers and students and between academic knowledge and everyday knowledge. These conflicts are considered as constituents of everyday dialetics of public schools in similar situations. Suggestions are put forward regarding the participation of school professionals as progressive actors within the institution, aiming at its transformation.
