TAILLE, Yves de la; MAIORINO, Clarissa; STORTO, Daniela Nogueira e ROOS, Luciana C. do Prado Velloso. Construction of the intimacy boundary: humiliation and shame in moral education. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1992, n.82, pp.43-55. ISSN 0100-1574.
This paper attempts to define a field of research on "intimacy moral boundary", in the intersection between studies on human behaviour concerning self-disclosure or silencing-about-oneself, and those on moral judgement ruling these behaviours. The paper relies on an inquiry about the subject of confessing a wrongdoing, one among regulated forms of self-disclosure. Clinical interviews were made with 70 children between 6 and 14 years old, about a dilemma involving punishment in a school situation. Data show that, as from the age of 8, public confession is felt as the most painful punishment, polarizing children's judgements; their opinions differ, though, on whether this be a correct form of punishment. Ensuing pedagogic attitudes are also discussed: whereas any punishment inevitably entails shame, the practice of explicit and public humiliation may bring about negative effects on young children's development.
