This paper aims to understand the representations and practices of reading of concluding students in a Rio de Janeiro public high school. The focus of research is how teaching of language and literature influences the relationship of students with reading. The concept of representations used is based on Roger Charter’s ideas, who identified them as classification and judgment schemes that organize world understanding. Data was collected through fieldwork. Data analysis showed that, for most students, teacher do not achieve its goal of contributing to the literacy of students.
