We evaluated the semantic performance in 28 children with Down Syndrome between the ages of 24 to 83 months. The mothers answered a questionnaire on their childrens semantic performance. Children between the ages of 50 to 83 months were observed to have a better performance regards the receptive aspect than children between the ages of 24 to 49 months, and the expressive aspect was delayed when compared to the receptive aspect. Between the ages of 50 to 83 months the presence of jargon was noticeable, which was not found within the preceding age group. Thus, we concluded that there is variability in linguistic development in children with Down syndrome, although they all presented delays in language acquisition and discrepancy between the receptive and expressive capacity. The mothers are reliable informers on their childrens semantic development.
