The paper discusses the three central axes which define the American higher education model: its public orientation, its administration by the states, and its diversity of academic purposes. The discussion is essentially supported by statistical data published by me Chronicle of Higher Education's 1997-1998 Almanac Issue and by considerations raised by me Boyer Report on me state of undergraduate education in American Research Universities.
