This article discusses the major transformations which occurred in the Venezuelan public university during the last four decades 06 the twentieth century as well as its main challenges and trends. The text suggests a disquieting perception of the future of this Venezuelan institution, particularly with respect to the possible risks brought about by the weakening of the university's social function.
