This article discusses the meaning of being a university professor, today, in the context of the general crises and particularly of the identity crisis faced by the university, the paradigm changes in the scientific arena and the changing values within society. With regard to these general transformations and, above all, considering the predominance of market values, the university has to take upon itself roles that require that it not only go beyond its technical dissemination and production of knowledge but also contribute to the elevation of conscience and human development in its strongest sense. This will require that it overcome Scientifics, technicist, and utilitarianist perspectives in its teaching and research activities, replacing them by a critical-emancipatory rationality. The university should not allow it self to be characterized by a simple adherence to market demands; it should instead enhance its cultural dimension in its strongest human sense.
