The present research was developed in a Municipal School in Caxias do Sul in the state of Rio Grande do Sul with six female Early Childhood Education teachers with the purpose of investigating their beliefs about the teaching practice. To reach the objective, a group was formed to discuss the following question: “what does teaching mean to you?”. The replies were investigated from a historical and cultural perspective. The results showed that teaching is considered a vocation, a gift from God, but little appreciation is given to teacher training. Within this context, this paper is relevant because it provides a critical reflection about performance and teacher training in Early Childhood Education, as well as questioning the nature of teaching and exposing contradictions.
