This study aimed to understand the perspectives of tutors in distance education (DE) regarding the mentoring activities developed at specialization level in a higher education institution in Brazil. This qualitative research used a case study method operationalized through archival research and written interviews with a script predominantly composed of open questions. This script was made available for completion, by electronic means, and had the participation of twenty-three subjects. The main results indicate that most participants believe that the influence of the tutor on student learning positively influence this process, confirming theoretical assumptions of the authors who address this subject. It was interesting to note that some respondents reported that they carry out activities as teachers. Although they are not institutionally recognized as teachers, some of the tutors, participants in this study, consider that they act as a 'teacher' in the courses surveyed.
