The analyzes carried out in this article come from studies and reflections that recognize the relevance of Paulo Freire Pedagogy, especially in the current context, in which disputes over conceptions of education are fiercer. We aim to reflect on the challenges faced by the Brazilian public school facing these times of “neoconservative wave” in the country. The methodological path is a bibliographical review of Freire's works, which are still current, with potential for analysis on the contemporary educational context. Through the literature review, we reiterate that Paulo Freire, concrete and theoretical authority in the history of Brazilian education, continues to contribute to the reaffirmation of the importance of a democratic Popular Education. His works and experiences in the field of education reveal potential for theoretical and methodological analyzes, reflections and propositions about the current educational context.
