In the present article we aim to understand the effective working conditions of high school teachers in the public high school system of the Northeastern states of Pernambuco and Alagoas. For this discussion, we included the teachers' career and remuneration, teaching effort, and the infrastructure of the high schools. To do so, we used a dialectical approach, because we understand that quantitative aspects and qualitative analysis must go hand in hand. For data collection, we used the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) statistical software in order to extract microdata from the 2019 School Census. We analyzed educational indicators of teachers and state high schools. The research pointed out that the state of Alagoas with almost 60% of teachers with temporary contracts, and Pernambuco with almost 40% symbolize well the situation of teachers and their working conditions. The exclusive dedication to a single school, with a single employment contract and adequate infrastructure are issues that are still far from the reality of teachers in these states, which also means a distance from the goals of the National Education Plan. What we see, therefore, is the potentialization of these limits from the High School Reform, in addition to a silencing in Law 13.415/2017 in the perspective of improving these working conditions.
