SOUSA, Fabiana Rodrigues de. Educational actions by militant prostitutes: building trust and autonomy. Revista da FAEEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2015, vol.24, n.43, pp.161-169. ISSN 0104-7043. https://doi.org/10.2015/jan.jun.v24n43.013.
This article draws upon reflections that arose during post-doctoral research carried out with prostitutes belonging to occupational associations located in the cities of Belo Horizonte/MG, Campina Grande/PB, João Pessoa/PB and Recife/PE. The aim of this research was to reveal educational processes that were consolidated while these women were engaged in their sexual profession and involved in militant activities in pursuit of their rights. Using the principles of Popular Education as a base for the methodological approach of this research, both researcher and prostitutes seek to identify and analyze the experiential knowledge acquired from the educational and cultural activities developed by these women. The results of this investigation lead to the understanding of how the process whereby prostitutes have organized themselves in associations has played an important role in strengthening the critical interpretation of reality, while fostering the development of self-esteem and self-confidence necessary for these women to be able and motivated to engage in the quest for their rights. Educational activities undertaken by these women function as cultural circles in which they reveal their anxieties and their aesthetics while asserting their subjectivity.
