This article presents a reading of our first systematic history of education in Brazil: Instruction Publique au Brésil - Histoire et Législation (1889). Key to this reading is the combat against the libertine habits in the city of Rio de Janeiro as well as the defense of wide reforms in Brazilian society. The conclusion is that, in spite of being the first book on a central theme on the history of education in Brazil, it is not a seminal work in the area of school discipline.
