This article consists of a synthesis of a theoretical frame elaborated on the basis of some important contributions in the field of evaluation of students' performance in the 1990's. The research tried to identify the trends, focus, predominant concepts of the literature of the period which may have contributed to the evaluation practices actually employed in the classroom. The conclusion is that the simple knowledge of theories is insufficient to influence the usual in-class practices if no effort is made to promote debate, exchange of experiences and the educators' attitude changes in relation to his continued education, especially in what concerns his own conceptions about teaching, learning and knowledge.
