The purpose of the article is to discuss the initial teacher training undertaken by the Escola Normal da Bahia during the First Republic, in which the practice of knowledge was considered a determining quality for the teaching specialty, its professional condition. In order to implement this formative concept, both legislation and the pedagogical organization of the course created spaces for the practical performance of normal students. The documental basis of the investigation consisted of reports from directors and inspectors, articles from educational magazines and newspapers written by teachers, opinions and educational legislation. The investigation pointed out that the process of modernization of the teaching curriculum in Bahia was the result of conflicts over a “professional feature”, which assumed the idea of “practice” as a teacher professionalization marker. This formative conception provoked changes in the school space with the creation of daily environments and procedures for professional practice and experimentation.
