This article follows the paths of the women's movement in Brazil (from the seventies on), considering feminism as one of its manifestations. The analysis takes into account the particular feature of an essentially unequal society such as the Brazilian one and the context of political authoritarianism from where the movement emerged. This social and political context shaped its singular form: it is an inter-class movement and it has a strong political tendency which contributes to leave the specific questions of women behind. Those issues came to light later; in the beginning of the eighties when the process od redemocratization began.
