In recent decades, state reform processes in the field of education have been marked by private management practices implemented in public systems. This article, drawn from a broader research that analyzed the assessments of state basic education networks, focuses on how the results of these assessments are used to define public policies. The documentary research method is adopted to develop categories that characterize the uses of these results in policy-making. The period between 2003 and 2014 was selected as it captures trends in state-level assessments following the implementation of the Índice de Desenvolvimento da Educação Básica [Primary Education Development Index] (Ideb). The findings indicate a growing link between assessment results and school reward schemes and/or performance-based bonuses for education professionals.
