MOTA, José. Personal Learning Environments: contributos para uma discussão do conceito. Educ. Form. Tecnol. [online]. 2009, vol.02, n.02, pp.05-21. ISSN 1646-933X.
The notion (or notions) of Personal Learning Environment represents, in a way, the convergence of many of the key aspects underlying the social and cultural changes brought about by technological development, namely the Web 2.0 phenomenon. These aspects have, inevitably, a strong impact on education and on the ways we understand learning. Despite some consensual ideas around the concept of PLE, there is a wide diversity of perspectives on what it may be, which makes it difficult to reach a unique, stable definition of this concept. In this article, we try to bring forward these varied approaches, focusing on the perspectives that, in our opinion, are the most relevant. We start by referring to the origins and foundations of the concept of Personal Learning Environment; then, we talk about some definitions that have been put forward and the characteristics attributed to PLEs; we further discuss its relationship with the Virtual Learning Environments used by institutions; and, finally, we describe some important initiatives to create a personal learning environment.
