Social media are present in the daily life of people of different ages; therefore, it is important to discuss the inclusion of these in the development of educational activities, enabling interaction beyond the classroom between students and teachers. In this article we present the results of a content analysis and also the results of a qualitative approach to quantitative held between teachers and students of Instituto Federal do Sertão Pernambucano - Campus Petrolina about the use of social networks, that aimed to report and discuss the use of Facebook as a platform for teaching and learning. We conclude that social media, in the opinion of students and teachers, can be an ally in the development of pedagogical activity.
