SILVA, Rafaela Faria da e PEDROSA, Stella Maria Peixoto de Azevedo. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND AUTISM: A look at the public municipal schools of Rio de Janeiro. Revista Teias [online]. 2024, vol.25, n.79, e79205. Epub 07-Maio-2025. ISSN 1982-0305. https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2024.79205.
Changes in Brazilian education have determined the access of students with disabilities, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and High Skills or Giftedness to regular teaching classes. To guarantee this access, Specialized Educational Assistance was instituted, mainly in the Multifunctional Resource Rooms. The Guidance Manual for the Multifunctional Resource Rooms Implementation Program states that the composition of these rooms includes Assistive Technology (AT) that encompasses products, strategies, services, resources, methodologies, and practices with the aim of promoting the participation, autonomy, and functionality of people with disabilities, permanent or momentary disabilities, reduced mobility, and Pervasive Developmental Disorders. This article aims to analyze the speeches of 17 Resource Rooms Implementation teachers of autistic elementary school students from schools belonging to the 8th regional internal affairs department of the municipal public network in Rio de Janeiro, regarding the context and use of AT by these students. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed based on Bardin. It was evident that most Resource Rooms Implementation teachers have generalist initial training for teaching, little time working in Resource Rooms Implementation and knowledge about AT, including those aimed at people with autism; In addition, there was many autistic students in the Resource Rooms Implementation and a lack of articulation between the Resource Rooms Implementation teachers and the health professionals who care for their students. Therefore, more investments in AT are needed.
