This article presents a cross intellectual biography of two French social scientists that participated in USP's foundation: Pierre Monbeig and Roger Batside. We want to illustrate how the confront with Brazilian social reality in the 1930's (as the process of foundation-refoundation of cities in the coffee regions or miscegenation in northeast) has obligated these young students with traditional formation in geography and sociology to reconsider their epistemological and methodological bases to construct a set of useful concepts and approaches to analyze the observed phenomena.
