The Training Division of the São Paulo Municipal Education Secretariat planned and carried out in 1973 a program of courses for the teachers who taught first-grade at the elementary schools. This article describes the evaluation made of that training and which was comprised of the following procedures: a) an evaluation of the expectations from the personnel belonging to the network for confrontation with the Division's plan in terms of objectives and ways for executing them; b) an evaluation of the training process in itself and comprising the cognitive and opinion aspects; c) follow-up questionnaire covering the year after the training. There were positive gains as to the knowledges acquired, however very uneven as to the area of contents, and changes in the teacher's planning in the following year, upon using that knowledge.
