The present study is part of a large research project on patterns of sex-roles transmitted by schools. Differences in male and female schooling are analysed, according to data collected by various government institutions on and after 1970, for Brazil's and the state of São Paulo's population. Both the population that has attended school and theone presently enrolled are included in the study. Data analysis refer to: 1) literacy; 2) enrolled population; 3) school achievement; 3.1) graduation; 3.2) failure and success; 3.3) educational lag. The following conclusion are draw: 1) female population is inferior to the male population in literacy and schooling; 1.1) differences between the two populations get smaller from year to year (inter-Census comparison); 1.2) differences between the two populations are lower in the younger groups (intra-Census comparison); 2) The female population shows a better school performance; 2) lower rate of failure; 2.2) higher rate of graduation; 2.3) higher proportion of students attending each grade at the appropriate age.
