This paper presents a review of the occupational preparation of the 11,910 middle-level personnel of the nine most populous technical occupational families in the top six percent of the managerial and managerial support personnel (N = 22,619) of a near-random sample of São Paulo, Brazil's manufacturing firms (N = 688). All had completed at least five years of school and none had attended a university. A simple model of the determinants of wage differentials is applied to each family to learn how occupational preparation, occupational influence level in the companies, age, seniority, and on-the-job experience affect hourly wages. Despite the restricted educational and occupational range, the model works moderately well, accounting for 16 to 35% of the wage variance.
