The article presents the results of an exploratory study on children's social perception. Subjects were 180 children of both sexes and three age groups (5, 7 and 9 years old), from various private schools of São Paulo. They were tested through an instrument (TPS) in which dolls representing the children's family are classified in two groups, according to certain dimension like strength and activity. Results show that children progressively incorporate in their perception the cultural stereotypes about masculine and feminine roles. Stereotypes also affect the development of girls and boys' self-concepts.
